This post is specifically for the Hist Elective students, but its talking about Social Studies in general. It’s for those who did not turn up for Ms Wee’s remedial lessons- notes from her lessons. Here are the main details:
Exam Format:
In general:
Look at your SS textbook content page. There you will find the outline of the chapters there. Notice the bolded, headlined words in the blue boxes. (Singapore as a nation in the world, Understanding governance etc), these are called themes. Each theme can contain more than 1 chapter. Note: For EOYs and O levels, chapter one is non-examinable.
The Chapters tested for SS EOYs are Chapter 2,3(up to healthcare in Singapore only), 4 and 5.
For EOYS
There will be 2 broad parts to the paper.
Section A: Source-based Question (SBQ)
Section B: Structured-Essay Question (SEQ)
SBQ
There will be one question for SBQ in four sub questions: a,b,c and d. All questions are compulsory! The SBQ will involve only 1 chapter. If a chapter is tested for SBQ, it will not be tested for SEQ. (E.g: If the question for SBQ is russia, russia will not be tested for SEQ) For SS, background information will be given where necessary. Note: No background info for History.
SEQ
There will be 2 sets of questions, consisting of 2 sub-questions: a or b. ANSWER ONLY ONE QUESTION SET. Note: You must answer the questions as a set. In other words, lets say there is:
Q1a,b.
Q2,a,b.
You CANNOT answer question 1a, then question 2b. You MUST answer question 1 a and b OR question 2a and b.
Each set of questions will be set on a particular theme. The theme for SEQ may be the same as SBQ, but not the topic/case study itself. Each SEQ question set is on a different theme. AS each theme consists of different chapters, Q (a) and (b) may be testing different or the same chapters, so long as they are of the same theme.
E.g:
Answer one question
1. Conflict and Harmony in Multi-ethnic societies
(a) How far was the Sinhalese-Tamil conflict due to the resettlement policy? Explain your answer.
(b) “Divided loyalties was the most important factor in causing the conflict in Northern Ireland”. How far do you agree with this statement?
2. Understanding Governance
(a) How far was the control of traffic flow in Singapore achieved by the Vehicle Quota System?
(b) “Leadership is key is the most important principle of governance”. How far do you agree?
The total mark for the paper is 50mark.
Each section is 25marks.
O Levels
The format is the same, except that for SEQ, there will be 3 question sets. Choose 1.
History
Exactly the same. 2 sets of SEQ for EOYS and 3 sets of SEQ for O levels. SBQ exactly the same.
Revision Summary (SEQ)
The following is a summary of what are the types of questions that can come out for SEQ.
Chapter 2
Principles of Governance: Which factor is the most important?

Chapter 3

Policies to meet healthcare needs: How do these factors help meet these healthcare needs?
Chapter 4
Sri-lanka

Managing diversity: Which is the most important?
Advice From Ms Wee:
When you study,
-prepare the basic explainations you’ll need for each factor. Explainations will change according to the question demands but its important to get the basic ex for each factor.
-Do some background thinking. Rank each factor for a particular topic. Which is the most important factor and why? Rank them in order from the most important to the least.
